Cabasa CIC: Endomorphosis: Empowering Body Paint | 4 February – 25 March 2023

women who have had theri body painted to represent endometriosis

Metamorphosis is an ongoing project by Cabasa (based in Mossley, Tameside) using body paint as a tool for wellbeing and empowerment.

In March 2022 we brought together a group of incredible women with Endometriosis who responded to our callout to take part in our ongoing work using body painting for wellbeing. We met with these women and artists to talk about their experiences and how we could best represent them and their stories. We spent a whole day with everyone for our body painting day and we captured some amazing and powerful images.

“ I feel heard for the first time in almost 12 years. This is the first time I have met so many women who know what my thoughts and feelings have been over the years, without me even needing to find words to express it.”

Every March is Endometriosis Awareness Month and we delivered this part of the project in March 2022.
We have found combining art and raising awareness are a perfect combination and tool for social change, as well as wellbeing and empowerment.
It takes 8 years on average for a diagnosis of this condition. This is both because of low awareness amongst clinical professionals and women’s own expectations of periods, specifically that high pain is typical and must just be tolerated.
Through sharing information online, sharing work with the local community and friends and family, we want to help raise awareness and help women secure diagnoses earlier.

Our artistic director Emily also has lived experience with endometriosis.
