6 July – 18 September 2021
Gallery Oldham presents the first large scale exhibition of contemporary art and performance by Leeds based artist Benedict Phillips. This exhibition initially appears to be about dyslexia but as you look further you will see common threads and experiences that unite us as humans.
Inspired by his own life Benedict has been exploring social and political ideas of difference through photography, sculpture, performance and video since 1995, when his ‘Agenda of the Aggressive Dyslexic’ was published. He is “very good at being disleksick” and his work concentrates on his experiences of living in a leksick world.
His art, films, writing and actions demonstrate that through a polarised dark neurodiverse experience he shines a light on the way that we all think and navigate the world around us. Benedict has created a new short film re-reading of The Agenda of the Agresiv Dislecksick… (please note that this film contains some adult language)
Artworks in the exhibition includes his ‘Benedictionary’, a dyslexic dictionary with over 2500 alternative spellings; his persona, The DIV, represented in the exhibition, through photography, video and a new performance featuring The Black DIV and new photographic and sculptural works.
Benedict says “Exploring and communicating through doing and making images is fundamental to human nature despite the text heavy society that we live in. My work is deadly serious about some flippant attitudes within society and deliberately provocative and humorous about the harsh experiences of this life”.
Accompanying the exhibition is a new hardback book of photography, printed by fine art specialists, with a critical essay by artist and academic Aby Watson (The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and with an index (A to Z of dyslexic ideas) by Benedict Phillips. Over the duration of the exhibition we will be releasing 27 short films created by Benedict which move through the alphabet. So watch out on our social media channels for the latest installments… you can also view A-D at the bottom of this webpage.
A series of events and performances will also take place including an artist’s talk at Gallery Oldham on Saturday 4 September at 2pm.
Being Benedict Philips is financially supported by Gallery Oldham and Oldham Council and funding from Arts Council England. With special thanks to Access Space, LEDA and Leeds Inspired.
